Take in a movie, enjoy a skate around the rink or marvel at the world's largest pumping plant. There's something to entertain everyone in The Gladlands.
W.G. Huxtable Pumping Plant
A little out of the way, but worth every bit of the drive, the W.G. Huxtable Pumping Plant is the world's largest storm water pumping plant. It has revolutionized regional agriculture, draining an area the size of the State of Delaware. Located off Highway 79 seven miles from Marianna, the station is an engineering marvel and gives visitors a fascinating look at natural resource management. Peer out from atop the plant high above the mighty Mississippi and St. Francis Rivers and marvel at the flood line that marks where flood waters once rose in the catastrophic floods of the 1920's and 30's. It is equivalent to a six story building constructed in three parts, most underground and is designed expressly for withstanding floods, earthquakes, and whatever else Mother Nature might produce.
Tours are conducted by request. For more information contact the plant at 870-295-9108 or view the website at www.mum.usacc.army.mil.
